Yarway to Turn 100
2/6/2008
When the Simplex Engineering Company—later to become the Yarnall-Waring Company and eventually Yarway Corporation—was established, the founders were young men who, by Quaker tradition and training, believed that a business should do more than produce profits for the owners. According to Robert Yarnall’s written account, the decision to start a business was made on a warm Sunday afternoon in 1908 as he and Bernard Waring, a boyhood friend who attended the same grammar school, stopped to rest during a walk along Crum Creek in Philadelphia, Pa. At that time, Yarnall was working as an engineering assistant and Waring was a traveling salesman for other privately-owned companies.
In 1908, with most of their accomplishments in front of them, Waring and Yarnall faced a major decision: What type of business should it be? More practical thinking prevailed, leading to the placement of an ad in several engineering and trade publications stating that “parties with capital desired to make and sell articles of merit.” John V. Scmidt submitted his invention of pipe joint clamps and had good ideas for other steam specialty products. With the first product coming off of the drawing board, a new location was needed. An office was moved from Yarnall’s home to 918 Locust Street in Chestnut Hill, Pa. At the same time, arrangements for production of the company’s pipe clamps were made with a nearby machine shop. Soon, the full time efforts of Waring paid off and the business began to fall in line.
In 1910, now with steam field experience, Waring and Yarnall found a pressing need for an improved boiler blow-off valve. At the time, existing blow-off valves were vulnerable to the destructive effects of boiler water containing sediment and other abrasives because they had a seat at the sealing point. By focusing on the major limitation common to contemporary blow-off valves, both men came up with a seatless valve. Today, Yarway still offers this design used extensively throughout the steam industry.
In 1911, with the business steadily increasing, Yarnall quit his other full-time job. The same year, the steam flow meter was introduced. Additionally, the name Yarway was developed with combined letters from the founders.
Under Yarnall’s direction, Yarway had continued to develop innovative solutions for the steam power industry. Examples included the double-tightening valve, inclined water gage and the involute spray nozzle. All of these products were outsourced to a manufacturer and a decision had to be made to start manufacturing the products themselves. In 1918, the dream came true. A new site at Mermaid Lane in Chestnut Hill was selected.
In 1935, the thermodynamic steam trap was invented. In contrast to the larger mechanical traps, it was small, lightweight, easy to install and service and fast-acting. Instead of discharging condensate after it accumulated, the new trap discharged the instant condensate was formed. In 1954, the one millionth steam trap was produced and sold. Still today, the model 731/741 Impulse Trap is used.
From the 1960s through the ‘80s, the influence by Waring and Yarnall prevailed. Many new and innovative products were designed and manufactured at the new Blue Bell, Pa. location which opened in 1967. The power generating plant construction boom allowed Yarway to enter the control, line and pump protection valve markets. Constant improvements and enhancements kept the Yarway brand products the market leaders in valves, level control and steam traps.
In 1987, Keystone International purchased Yarway Corporation. Then in 2001, Tyco International purchased Keystone International. Today, 100 years later, Tyco Flow Control still maintains Yarway founders Waring and Yarnall’s early 1908 discussions:
•The product must be needed and perform better than anything else being offered.
•There must be an “engineering reason” for its superiority, representing a distinct improvement in the art.
•It must be worth its price, making it a profitable investment for the user.
•The margin between manufacturing cost and selling price must be sufficient to permit vigorous advertising and sales representation and to render necessary assistance in the field to guarantee user satisfaction.
Only looking back at the years following those youthful discussions along Crum Creek is it possible to reflect on the full meaning of Yarnall’s words: “pondering the things that matter most.” The accomplishments enjoyed by both gentlemen and how the Yarway brand evolved, indicates how dedication, human respect and overcoming hard times can make a legacy that will last for many years into the future.
The article was written from excerpts from “Yarway, a Story of Corporate Renewal” in celebration of the 75th anniversary of Yarway Corporation.

TYCO FLOW CONTROL ANNOUNCES MAJOR EXPANSION FOR VANESSA BUSINESS
12/10/2007
Investment of $15 million to boost production capacity by more than 80 percent
Princeton, N.J. – Dec. 10, 2007 – Tyco Flow Control, a segment of Tyco International, announced today the finalization of a four-phase plan to expand its Vanessa valve plant in Lugagnano Val d’Arda, Italy. When completed, the expansion will grow the facility from 30,000 to 50,000m2. Vanessa valves are used in the oil and gas, power generation, chemical and petrochemical industries to achieve fire safe, zero-leakage shut-off over a range of temperatures from -254 degrees C (-425 degrees F) to +815 degrees C (+1499 degrees F).
Phase one of the expansion which included an additional test facility and assembly area for larger valves was completed in September 2007 while phase two, due for completion at the end of January 2008, will see an additional 1,800m2 of warehouse space and 410m2 of office space added to the facility and the machine shop will be expanded on the existing site. A new road is being constructed to the rear of the site and phase three will expand the manufacturing area by 900m2 and join the previously separate sections of the phase one areas. A deadline of late May 2008 is set for completion.
The final stage of expansion will see the addition of a further 2,000m2 by February 2009 bringing the total additional area of the new site to 15,000m2, 7000m2 of which will be covered. As a result the total plant area by the end of the project will be 50,000m2.
Acquired by Tyco in 1997, Vanessa has pioneered the metal seated, zero leakage, rotary process valve since 1975. With a worldwide reputation for design excellence, the plant in Lugagnano Val d’Arda, Italy, about an hour and a half’s drive south of Milan, has continued to grow and evolve since then. The total workforce currently numbers around 190 people and is set to increase to 220.
Vice President and Managing Director of Tyco Valves and Controls, Italia, Antonio Cafaro said, “This investment is an indication of how our business continues to grow worldwide and an example of our commitment to supplying high quality products to our global customer base. Vanessa’s strong commitment to operational excellence is essential as we expand both our facility and our ability to meet the demands of our customers.”
Vanessa’s application of flow manufacturing and its investment in modern technology has been consistent over the years, as evidenced by several official certifications. The most notable have been the achievement of ISO 9001 in 1992, ISO 14001 (environmental management system) in 2002 and most recently OHSAS 18001 (occupational health and safety management systems) in 2006.
Cafaro went on to say that Vanessa will also be investing in its human resources. “Identifying and promoting talent within the company has been vital to achieving our goals and making the Vanessa brand the success that it is today. We foster a climate of continued professional development,” he said. “This type of investment is every bit as important as our investment in our plant and equipment.”
