Notice of Viscosity Conversion Error |
23 Mar 2010 22:51:56 GMT
Tyco Valves & Controls has identified a unit conversion error corresponding to applications that are sized for viscous liquid service.
Currently, TYCO PRV2SIZE software (pr_20100225.1) does not account for the specific gravity in the conversion from kinematic viscosity units into centipoises (cP) for Reynolds number calculations.
The Reynolds number is used to calculate the viscosity correction factor, Kv.
The units affected by this conversion error are shown below:
- cm2 / s
- cSt
- ft2 / s
- in2 / s
- m2 / s
- mm2 / s
- SSU
Our findings are:
- When the value of the specific gravity (SG) is <1.0, the valve will be oversized. The further SG is from 1.0, the greater the over-sizing.
- When the value of the specific gravity (SG) is >1.0, the valve will be under-sized. The further SG is from 1.0, the greater the under-sizing.
- The larger the viscosity, the more over-sized or under-sized the valve will be.
In most viscous liquid service applications, viscosity units are traditionally specified in units of cP (centipoises), which does not contain the conversion error.
Tyco pressure relief valves for viscous liquid service applications potentially impacted by this unit conversion error are as follows:
Crosby
- JLT-JOS-E, JLT-JBS-E, JLT-JBS-BP-E
- Series 900 Omni-Trim
- Series BP Omni-Trim
Anderson Greenwood
- Type 81P
- Series 400
- Series 500
- Series 800
Tyco will deploy a critical update correcting this unit conversion error for viscous liquid service applications within the next few days.
This critical update, once downloaded by the user, will automatically correct any saved tags that might have been affected by this viscous liquid service unit conversion error. Therefore, we suggest you print a copy of your saved tags for any viscous liquid service sizing calculations that used the viscosity units listed above before running the critical update.
RECOMMENDATION:
Until this critical update is deployed, DO NOT USE TYCO PRV2SIZE TO SIZE VISCOUS LIQUID SERVICE APPLICATIONS WHEN ANY OF THE SEVEN UNITS ABOVE ARE NOTED IN THE SPECIFICATION PROCESS CONDITIONS.
In addition, we are requesting any previous viscous liquid service sizing calculations that included these viscosity units performed using PRV2SIZE software (pr_20100225.1) since its release on March 1, 2010 be transmitted to us for review. Please direct these sizing calculations to:
rasmith@tycovalves.com
Alternatively, you may re-size these viscous liquid service applications once the critical update has been deployed by Tyco.
We apologize for this temporary inconvenience and appreciate your patience while we resolve this unit conversion error.

Discontinuation of SafetySize Sizing & Selection Software Program |
26 Oct 2009 17:29:55 GMT
With the official release of TYCO PRV2SIZE Pressure Relief Valve & Vent Sizing software on February 28, 2010, please be advised the SafetySize Sizing & Selection software program will become obsolete and discontinued effective March1, 2010.
The SafetySize download link on our sizing website will be disabled by Tyco on March 1, 2010 and the ability to download this software program will cease on this date. All IT support for the SafetySize program will also cease as of this date.
We anticipate that some users may elect to keep the SafetySize software installed on their computer in order to refer back to previous tag number information on specific projects. However, please note that the SafetySize program was developed with technology that is now outdated and the SafetySize program is not compatible with newer operating systems such as Windows Vista or Windows 7, so we will not update or patch the software. The TYCO PRV2SIZE software is a replacement for, not an update to, the SafetySize program, so installing the TYCO PRV2SIZE software will not uninstall the SafetySize program. Also, users cannot import tags into TYCO PRV2SIZE so it will be necessary for the user to re-type the tag information if they want that tag to be kept in the TYCO PRV2SIZE program..
We encourage users of SafetySize to begin using TYCO PRV2SIZE Pressure Relief Valve & Vent Sizing & Selection software with its improved functionality and greatly expanded capabilities across a wide range of Anderson Greenwood, Crosby and Varec brand pressure relief devices and related products.

Safety Size Advisory - Safety Size Reaction Force Calculations |
29 Oct 2007 23:56:52 GMT
Tyco Valves & Controls has discovered an error in the calculation of reaction forces using the Safety Size program under certain conditions. We ask for your immediate attention to this matter and to follow the recommendations listed below. Failure to follow these recommendations could lead to serious bodily injury or property damage.
The reaction force calculation in Safety Size has a unit conversion error that results in a value that is approximately 22% of the correct value. This error only occurs on reaction force calculations set up with the following parameters regardless of the other settings:
|
CALCULATION TYPE |
SIZING BASIS |
REACTION FORCE UNITS |
|
Steam Area |
Section VIII |
Lbf |
|
Steam Area |
Other |
Lbf |
|
Steam Flow |
Section VIII |
Lbf |
|
Steam Flow |
Other |
Lbf |
A calculation using any other combination of these parameters, regardless of other settings, produces the correct value.
This reaction force calculation error exists in all releases of the Safety Size program.
A copy of a typical Safety Size data sheet is included with this Advisory highlighting the pertinent inputs and the location of the erroneous reaction force output.
Tyco Valves and Controls recommend the following actions:
1. Customers who utilized Safety Size data sheets for pipe support designs using the above inputs should contact their local Tyco Valves & Controls sales office or authorized Tyco sales representative in order for us to provide a revised reaction force calculation.
2. All Safety Size users should immediately discontinue use of the reaction force values calculated under the above parameters. As an alternative procedure, reaction forces should be calculated using Newtons as the force unit. The resulting value can be converted to lbf by multiplying it by 0.2248 and added as a tag note to the data sheet.
While we realize most customers rely on the data presented in API RP 520 and/or ASME B31.1 to calculate reaction forces, this advisory is being sent as a precaution to alert those customers who may have used Safety Size to determine reaction force data under the above conditions as a precaution.
Safety Size will not be revised to correct this error since a new sizing and selection software program is presently under development and scheduled to be released later this year.
Tyco Valves & Controls regrets any inconvenience this may cause our customers, however, it is important that this Advisory’s recommendation be acted upon immediately.

Safety Size 2005 Known Issue |
5 Jun 2007 15:16:42 GMT
There is a known issue installing Safety Size 2005 on Windows XP with SP2. This started to appear after a service pack was released from Microsoft. The issue causes the installation of the MSDE to fail to connect after installation. In order to prevent this defect we have taken the Safety Size 2005 download off the website. Safety Size 2004 does not have this issue, and is still available for download.

Safety Size on Windows Vista |
31 Mar 2007 02:50:07 GMT
IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT:
All current versions of SafetySize have a known issue when running on Windows Vista. There is no fix for this issue. Do not try to run SafetySize on Windows Vista/Longhorn.
The next version of our program will support Windows Vista/Longhorn, however it is not due out until later this year.
